About Real imports of goods and services

What it measures

Real Imports of Goods and Services (FRED series IMPGSC1) measures the inflation-adjusted value of foreign-produced goods and services purchased by US households, businesses, and government. The Bureau of Economic Analysis publishes it quarterly in chained dollars. In GDP accounting imports are subtracted, since they represent spending on output produced elsewhere.

Why it matters

Imports are a direct window on US domestic demand: when consumers and businesses spend freely, imports rise. The series also reveals inventory-building ahead of expected tariffs or supply disruptions, and it shapes the trade contribution to GDP. Sharp import swings around trade policy changes can distort headline GDP in both directions.

How to read it

Strong import growth generally signals healthy domestic demand even though it mechanically subtracts from GDP; treat the subtraction as accounting, not economic weakness. Falling imports frequently accompany recessions as spending retreats. Watch for temporary surges when firms front-run tariffs, which depress GDP in the surge quarter and flatter it afterward as the effect unwinds.
