Durable Goods Orders (FRED series DGORDER) measures the dollar value of new orders received by US manufacturers of goods designed to last three years or more, from appliances to aircraft. The Census Bureau publishes an advance estimate monthly, seasonally adjusted, in the Manufacturers Shipments, Inventories and Orders program, with detail across transportation equipment, machinery, computers, metals, and defense hardware.

Why it matters

New orders precede production, so durables orders lead factory output and manufacturing employment by weeks to months. Because durable purchases are deferrable, businesses and consumers cut them first when confidence weakens, giving the series sharp cyclical sensitivity. Economists use it for GDP equipment-investment tracking, and industrial equity analysts read segment detail to gauge demand for machinery, aerospace, and technology hardware makers.

How to read it

Headline swings are dominated by transportation, since a single month of aircraft bookings can move the total by several percent, so always check orders excluding transportation for the underlying trend. The data are nominal and revised significantly between the advance and final estimates. Sustained declines ex-transportation across several months have reliably signaled manufacturing downturns, whereas a single negative print signals little.
