Forecasters feed it into GDP nowcasts for the consumption component. During inflationary periods the gap between nominal and real sales reveals how much purchasing power is eroding, a key input to recession risk assessment.

Monthly readings are choppy and heavily revised, so trends over three months carry more signal than single prints. The series covers mostly goods plus food services, missing the majority of services consumption, so it can understate total spending when households rotate from goods to travel and experiences. Flat real sales alongside rising nominal sales simply means inflation is absorbing the growth.
