About Industrial Production: Total Index

What it measures

The Industrial Production Index (FRED series INDPRO) measures the real output of US manufacturing, mining, and electric and gas utilities, published monthly by the Federal Reserve Board as a seasonally adjusted index with a 2017 base of 100. It is built from physical product data, electricity usage, and production-worker hours across hundreds of industries, making it one of the few high-frequency measures of actual physical output rather than spending.

Why it matters

Although industry is a minority share of GDP, it drives a disproportionate share of cyclical swings, so the index is a staple input to recession dating by the NBER and to monthly GDP tracking. It gauges the goods-producing economy directly, without price distortion. Equity analysts map its manufacturing detail to industrial-sector revenue, and the Federal Reserve publishes it, giving policymakers a house view of real activity.

How to read it

Focus on the manufacturing subindex, since utilities output swings with weather and mining with oil drilling, both of which can mask factory trends. Monthly changes are small and revised heavily, so three-month annualized rates give a cleaner momentum read. Sustained declines across multiple months have accompanied every modern recession, but goods-sector weakness can also occur while the larger services economy keeps expanding.
