About Job Openings: Total Nonfarm

What it measures

Job Openings (FRED series JTSJOL) counts unfilled positions on the last business day of the month for which employers are actively recruiting, from the Bureau of Labor Statistics Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey. It is published monthly with roughly a five to six week lag behind the reference month.

Why it matters

Openings measure labor demand directly, complementing unemployment as a measure of supply. The ratio of openings to unemployed workers summarizes labor market tightness and features prominently in Federal Reserve communication. The Beveridge curve relationship between openings and unemployment helps analysts judge whether cooling demand will show up as fewer vacancies or as layoffs.

How to read it

A high openings-to-unemployed ratio indicates a tight market with bargaining power tilted toward workers; a falling ratio signals cooling demand. Openings can decline substantially without job losses if employers simply stop recruiting, a relatively benign form of rebalancing. Survey response rates have declined over time and the data are volatile and revised, so emphasize trends over single months.
