About Hires: Total Nonfarm

What it measures

Hires (FRED series JTSHIL) counts the total number of additions to establishment payrolls during each month, from the Bureau of Labor Statistics Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey. Unlike net payroll growth, it captures gross hiring flow, including replacements for departing workers, and is published monthly with the other JOLTS components.

Why it matters

Gross hires reveal the true velocity of the labor market that net payroll figures conceal: millions of hires occur monthly even when net job growth is small. A falling hiring rate signals employer caution before layoffs appear, and it disproportionately hurts new entrants and job switchers, slowing wage growth through reduced churn.

How to read it

Compare hires against separations: the gap between them equals net employment change. A declining hires rate with stable layoffs describes a low-churn, frozen market where those with jobs are secure but job seekers struggle. Rising hires alongside rising quits indicates a dynamic market with confident workers. JOLTS data are volatile monthly, so track the rate over several months.
