About Quits: Total Nonfarm

What it measures

Quits (FRED series JTSQUL) counts voluntary separations initiated by employees during the month, excluding retirements, from the Bureau of Labor Statistics Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey. Published monthly, the quits level and the quits rate are widely used measures of workers' willingness to leave jobs, typically for better ones.

Why it matters

Quitting is a revealed-preference vote of confidence: workers rarely resign without prospects, so a high quits rate signals labor market strength and feeds wage growth as employers pay up to retain and attract staff. The Federal Reserve has cited the quits rate as a tightness gauge linked to wage inflation pressure.

How to read it

A rising quits rate points to worker confidence, active job-switching, and upward wage pressure; a falling rate shows workers hunkering down, which typically precedes or accompanies broader cooling. Quits fall sharply in recessions. Because job switchers historically earn faster wage gains than stayers, the quits trend also helps forecast wage growth several quarters ahead.
