About Total Separations: Total Nonfarm
What it measures
Total Separations (FRED series JTSTSL) counts all departures from establishment payrolls during the month, combining quits, layoffs and discharges, and other separations such as retirements and deaths. It comes from the Bureau of Labor Statistics Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey and is published monthly alongside hires and openings.
Why it matters
Separations complete the flow picture of the labor market: net employment change equals hires minus separations. The total matters less than its mix, because quits signal worker confidence while layoffs signal employer distress. Shifts in the composition often reveal a turning labor market before net payroll growth visibly changes.
How to read it
Rising separations driven by quits reflect a strong market where workers leave voluntarily for better positions; rising separations driven by layoffs indicate deterioration. Falling total separations usually mean workers are staying put, which can indicate either satisfaction or fear of a weak job market. Always decompose the total before interpreting it, and smooth across months.
