About Layoffs and Discharges: Total Nonfarm
What it measures
Layoffs and Discharges (FRED series JTSLDL) counts involuntary separations initiated by employers each month, including layoffs, terminations, and discharges for cause, from the Bureau of Labor Statistics Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey. It is published monthly and complements weekly jobless claims as a direct measure of employer-initiated job loss.
Why it matters
This is the cleanest monthly measure of employer distress. Labor market downturns can begin with hiring freezes, but they become recessions when layoffs rise broadly. Because the series distinguishes involuntary separations from quits, it clarifies whether falling employment reflects worker choice or employer retrenchment, a distinction net payroll data cannot make.
How to read it
A low, stable layoffs rate indicates employers are retaining workers even if hiring slows; a sustained rise across industries is a strong recession signal. Compare with initial claims for confirmation, noting that not all laid-off workers file for benefits. Single-month spikes sometimes trace to one large sector event, so check the industry detail before extrapolating.
