About Consumer Price Index (CPI)

What it measures

The Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers (FRED series CPIAUCSL) measures the average price level of a fixed basket of goods and services purchased by urban households, covering roughly 93 percent of the US population. The Bureau of Labor Statistics publishes it monthly, seasonally adjusted, with the index scaled to a 1982-1984 base of 100. This page shows the index level itself, not the inflation rate derived from it.

Why it matters

CPI is the most widely cited cost-of-living benchmark in the United States. It drives cost-of-living adjustments for Social Security, indexes tax brackets, sets payouts on TIPS and CPI swaps, and anchors wage negotiations. Because the Federal Reserve responds to sustained deviations from price stability, traders reprice rate expectations within minutes of each release, making CPI day one of the most volatile sessions on the macro calendar.

How to read it

The level itself rises almost continuously, so analysts focus on the month-over-month and year-over-year percent changes computed from it. Steepening in the index indicates accelerating inflation; a flattening slope signals disinflation. Watch for base effects, where a large move a year earlier mechanically distorts the annual rate. Headline CPI is noisy because food and energy swing sharply, which is why core measures are tracked alongside it.
