About Core PPI (Less Food & Energy)

What it measures

Core PPI (FRED series PPIFES) is the Producer Price Index for Final Demand excluding food and energy, published monthly by the Bureau of Labor Statistics with seasonal adjustment. It strips the two most commodity-driven groupings out of the headline final demand aggregate, leaving producer prices for core goods plus the full range of final demand services, trade margins, and construction that domestic producers sell.

Why it matters

By filtering out food and energy swings, core PPI offers a steadier read on pipeline inflation and producer pricing power. Forecasters lean on it when projecting the core PCE deflator, since several of its service components map into the Federal Reserve preferred inflation gauge. A persistent acceleration in core PPI often foreshadows firmer consumer inflation or, if consumer prices stay tame, warns of corporate margin pressure ahead.

How to read it

Compare its trajectory with core CPI: producer prices rising faster than consumer prices squeeze margins, while the reverse suggests margin expansion. The trade services components measure markups and can swing sharply month to month, so many analysts also watch the narrower series that excludes trade services. Single-month jumps deserve skepticism; a three-month trend is a far more reliable inflation signal.
