About PPI: Finished Goods
What it measures
The Producer Price Index for Finished Goods (FRED series WPSFD49207) tracks selling prices received by domestic producers for goods that are ready for sale to final users, such as consumer foods, gasoline, apparel, and capital equipment. Published monthly by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, it was the headline PPI aggregate for decades before 2014 and remains widely followed, with history extending back much further than the final demand series.
Why it matters
Its long history makes it the preferred PPI measure for studying inflation across many business cycles and for models that need decades of data. Because it covers only goods, it isolates the tangible-product side of pipeline inflation, responding quickly to commodity, freight, and manufacturing cost shocks. Industrial and consumer-goods analysts use it to anticipate cost pass-through into retail prices and manufacturer margins.
How to read it
Energy and food together dominate short-run movements, so sharp monthly swings usually trace back to gasoline or farm prices rather than broad inflation. Compare it against intermediate and crude goods indexes to see where in the production pipeline pressure is building or fading. Unlike the final demand index, it excludes services entirely, so it will miss inflation originating in labor-intensive sectors.
