About Core PCE Price Index

What it measures

The Core PCE Price Index (FRED series PCEPILFE) is the Personal Consumption Expenditures Price Index excluding food and energy, published monthly by the Bureau of Economic Analysis. Like the headline version it is chain-weighted and covers the full range of household consumption, but removing the volatile food and energy categories isolates the underlying trend. The series is presented as an index level with a 2012 base year.

Why it matters

When Federal Reserve officials discuss underlying inflation, core PCE is usually the number they mean, and the quarterly Summary of Economic Projections forecasts it explicitly. Markets therefore treat the monthly core PCE reading as the definitive scorecard on progress toward the inflation target. Portfolio managers use it to calibrate duration positioning, and its trajectory heavily influences pricing of rate cuts and hikes in futures markets.

How to read it

Focus on the annualized run rate over three and six months as well as the year-over-year change; short windows reveal turning points sooner but are noisier. Sustained monthly prints near 0.2 percent are consistent with the 2 percent goal. Analysts often further decompose the series into core goods, housing, and non-housing services, since the last category tracks labor-cost pressure most closely.
