About M2 Money Supply

What it measures

M2 (FRED series WM2NS) is the broad money supply, comprising M1 plus savings deposits, small-denomination time deposits, and retail money market fund balances. It is compiled by the Federal Reserve and released weekly without seasonal adjustment on the H.6 statistical release, with monthly seasonally adjusted data published alongside.

Why it matters

M2 is the most widely cited US monetary aggregate and a standard input to analyses of liquidity, nominal growth, and inflation risk. Unusual swings draw attention: the pandemic-era surge in 2020-2021 preceded the strongest inflation in four decades, and the subsequent contraction was the first sustained decline in the aggregate since the Great Depression era.

How to read it

Compare M2 growth to nominal GDP growth; money expanding far faster than output has historically been associated with inflation pressure, though with long and variable lags. Declines in the level are rare and typically reflect quantitative tightening or deposit outflows to money funds and Treasuries. Velocity is not constant, so avoid mechanical translations from M2 growth to price forecasts.
