About Bank Reserves

What it measures

Reserve balances with Federal Reserve Banks (FRED series WRESBAL) measure the deposits that commercial banks and other depository institutions hold in their accounts at the Fed. Together with currency, reserves make up the monetary base. The series is published weekly on the H.4.1 release and is stated in billions of dollars.

Why it matters

Reserves are the settlement asset of the US banking system and the direct counterpart of the Fed balance sheet: asset purchases add reserves, runoff and the Treasury General Account drain them. Money market participants watch the level closely because when reserves become scarce, overnight funding rates can spike, as happened in the September 2019 repo episode.

How to read it

Rising reserves generally indicate an expanding Fed balance sheet or drawdowns of other Fed liabilities; falling reserves accompany quantitative tightening. There is no fixed adequate level, since bank demand for reserves shifts with regulation and balance sheet size. Pressure signals appear in repo and fed funds rates before the reserve level itself looks alarming, so read the two together.
