About Currency in Circulation

What it measures

Currency in circulation (FRED series WCURCIR) measures the total value of Federal Reserve notes and coin held outside the Federal Reserve Banks, including cash in bank vaults and in the hands of the public. It is one of the two components of the monetary base. The Federal Reserve reports the series weekly as part of its H.4.1 balance sheet release.

Why it matters

Physical cash demand reflects transaction needs, precautionary hoarding, and substantial foreign holdings of US dollars. Sharp jumps have historically coincided with crises, when households and overseas holders stock up on banknotes. Because currency is a Fed liability, its growth also affects how many reserves the central bank must supply to keep the banking system funded.

How to read it

The series trends upward almost continuously with nominal GDP, so the level itself is rarely informative; watch deviations in the growth rate instead. Acceleration can indicate stress-driven cash demand or strong overseas dollar appetite, while unusually slow growth may reflect a shift toward electronic payments. It says little about domestic spending, since a large share of US currency circulates abroad.
