About M1 Money Supply

What it measures

M1 (FRED series WM1NS) is the narrow money supply: currency held by the public plus demand deposits and other liquid deposits at banks and thrifts. The Federal Reserve publishes it weekly on a not seasonally adjusted basis, alongside monthly seasonally adjusted figures, as part of the H.6 money stock release.

Why it matters

M1 captures money available for immediate spending, so economists use it to track transaction balances and the liquidity households and firms keep on hand. Rapid growth can precede stronger nominal spending, while stagnation may indicate tight credit or a preference for higher-yielding assets. It also serves as an input to velocity calculations and monetarist inflation frameworks.

How to read it

Interpret M1 with care around definitional breaks: in May 2020 savings deposits were reclassified into M1, producing a one-time jump of several trillion dollars that does not reflect new money creation. Outside such breaks, sustained acceleration suggests easier liquidity conditions and deceleration suggests tightening, but the relationship between M1 growth and inflation has been loose in recent decades.
