About 10 Year TIPS Yield

What it measures

The 10-year TIPS yield (FRED series WFII10) is the weekly average of the 10-year constant maturity yield on Treasury Inflation-Protected Securities, whose principal is indexed to CPI. It measures the real, inflation-adjusted return investors demand to lend to the US government for a decade, published via the Federal Reserve H.15 release from Treasury curve data.

Why it matters

The 10-year real yield is arguably the single most important discount rate in global finance: it sets the inflation-adjusted hurdle for long-horizon investments and heavily influences equity multiples, gold, and emerging market flows. Paired with the nominal 10-year, it yields the 10-year breakeven, the standard measure of long-run inflation expectations priced by markets.

How to read it

Rising 10-year real yields tighten conditions for risk assets and typically pressure valuations of long-duration growth stocks; falling real yields ease them. The series has swung from above four percent in its early years to below negative one percent in 2021-2022. When nominal yields move, check whether the real yield or the breakeven did the moving before assigning a cause.
