About Moody's Seasoned Baa Corporate Bond Yield

What it measures

The Moody's Baa corporate bond yield (FRED series WBAA) is the weekly average yield on seasoned long-maturity corporate bonds rated Baa, the lowest investment-grade rung on the Moody's scale. Like its Aaa counterpart, the series begins in 1919, offering an unbroken record of what moderately risky established corporations pay to borrow long term.

Why it matters

The Baa yield combines the risk-free rate with a meaningful credit premium, so it approximates the true cost of capital for a typical large US corporation. The Baa minus Aaa or Baa minus Treasury spread is a classic credit-cycle indicator that widens ahead of and during recessions, and it appears in decades of academic work on default premia.

How to read it

When the Baa yield rises faster than Treasury yields, credit conditions are deteriorating; when the spread compresses, risk appetite is strong. Spreads over long Treasuries have historically ranged from under one percentage point in benign periods to several points in crises such as 1932 and 2008. The seasoned, long-duration composition means the series responds slowly to new-issue market shifts.
