About 3 Month Treasury Bill Rate

What it measures

The 3-month Treasury bill rate (FRED series WGS3MO) is the weekly average of the market yield on US Treasury bills maturing in about thirteen weeks, quoted on an investment basis from the constant maturity series. The Treasury Department derives the figure from secondary market quotations and publishes it through the H.15 release.

Why it matters

The 3-month bill is the classic risk-free short rate used in academic models, Sharpe ratios, and cash benchmarks. It tracks the expected path of the federal funds rate over the next quarter, so gaps between the bill yield and the current policy rate reveal near-term market expectations for Fed moves. It also forms the short leg of closely watched curve spreads.

How to read it

The bill yield follows the fed funds rate closely, rising ahead of expected hikes and falling ahead of cuts. When the 3-month yield exceeds the 10-year yield, the curve inversion has historically been one of the more reliable recession warnings. Flight-to-quality episodes can briefly push bill yields down sharply, and debt-ceiling standoffs occasionally distort specific maturities.
