About Henry Hub Natural Gas Spot Price

What it measures

The Henry Hub Natural Gas Spot Price (FRED series MHHNGSP) measures the monthly average spot price of natural gas in dollars per million BTU at Henry Hub in Erath, Louisiana, the delivery point for NYMEX natural gas futures and the benchmark for North American gas pricing. The data originate with the Energy Information Administration, and the hub location at the junction of major pipelines makes it the reference price for the continent.

Why it matters

Natural gas fuels a large share of US electricity generation, heats roughly half of American homes, and is the key feedstock for fertilizer and many chemicals, so its price flows into utility bills, manufacturing costs, and food prices. Power producers, industrial firms, and LNG exporters hedge against this benchmark. The growth of US LNG exports has increasingly linked Henry Hub to global gas and European energy markets.
