About SOFR (Secured Overnight Financing Rate)

What it measures

The Secured Overnight Financing Rate (FRED series SOFR) measures the cost of borrowing cash overnight against US Treasury collateral in the repurchase agreement market. The Federal Reserve Bank of New York publishes it each business day as a volume-weighted median of transactions spanning tri-party repo, GCF repo, and cleared bilateral segments, typically covering more than a trillion dollars of daily volume.

Why it matters

SOFR replaced US dollar LIBOR as the reference rate for floating-rate loans, derivatives, and securitizations after LIBOR ceased, so trillions in contracts now reset off it. Because it is transaction-based and secured, it reflects actual funding conditions in the deepest money market. Spikes reveal collateral or reserve scarcity, as in the September 2019 repo disruption.

How to read it

SOFR normally trades within a few basis points of the fed funds rate and inside the Fed target range. Predictable upticks occur at month-, quarter-, and year-ends as dealer balance sheets contract. A sustained drift above the interest rate on reserves suggests funding pressure worth watching. As an overnight secured rate, it contains no credit-risk term premium, unlike the LIBOR it replaced.
