The daily series captures the onshore rate, which the People's Bank of China manages through a daily fixing and a trading band rather than allowing a free float.

Why it matters

USD/CNY prices the exchange between the two largest economies and shapes global trade competitiveness, Chinese capital flow pressure, and commodity demand expectations. Policy shifts in the fixing regime, such as the 2005 depegging and the August 2015 devaluation, have moved global markets. A weakening yuan often exports disinflation and pressures other Asian currencies.

How to read it

A rising number means yuan depreciation against the dollar; a falling number means appreciation, the reverse of USD-per-unit quotes. The rate was pegged near 8.28 until 2005, strengthened to about 6.0 by 2014, and has since fluctuated in a managed range near seven.
