Use QuoteMedia symbols and exchange data
Format QuoteMedia symbols, check plan coverage, and add non-professional exchange feeds for North America and international markets.
Use this guide when the MarketXLS function name begins with QM_, such as QM_Stream_Last, QM_Last, or QM_GetHistory. These functions use QuoteMedia symbols.
On a Mac or in Excel for the web, add the mxls. namespace to the function name. The symbol itself stays the same.
| Add-in | Example |
|---|---|
| Windows desktop | =QM_Stream_Last("SHOP:CA") |
| Mac or Excel for the web | =mxls.QM_Stream_Last("SHOP:CA") |
For a MarketXLS function that doesn't begin with QM_, check the formula reference. Another data source can use a different symbol format.
Add the exchange suffix
QuoteMedia usually formats an international equity as TICKER:SUFFIX. For example, SHOP:CA identifies the Canadian listing of Shopify on the Toronto Stock Exchange. SHOP without a suffix identifies its US listing.
Use these common suffixes:
| Market | QuoteMedia suffix | Format example |
|---|---|---|
| US consolidated equity or index | No suffix or :US | MSFT |
| Toronto Stock Exchange or TSX Venture Exchange | :CA | SHOP:CA |
| London Stock Exchange and FTSE UK indices | :LN | SYMBOL:LN |
| Xetra | :DB | SYMBOL:DB |
| Frankfurt | :FF | SYMBOL:FF |
| Amsterdam | :AS | SYMBOL:AS |
| Paris | :PA | SYMBOL:PA |
| Milan | :MI | SYMBOL:MI |
| Madrid | :MA | SYMBOL:MA |
| Swiss Market | :SM | SYMBOL:SM |
| Hong Kong | :HK | SYMBOL:HK |
| Sydney | :AU | SYMBOL:AU |
This table contains common examples, not every venue. Use QuoteMedia's complete Symbol Help Guide for the current exchange list and security-specific rules.
The base ticker can differ from the symbol used by a broker or a public website. Confirm the company name, listing venue, and country before you copy a suffix onto a ticker.
Use the colon format in shared workbooks
The Windows add-in currently converts a few website-style symbols for QuoteMedia requests:
.TOto:CA.Lto:LN.DEto:FF
The Microsoft 365 add-in sends the symbol as entered. Use QuoteMedia's colon format, such as SHOP:CA, in new and cross-platform workbooks instead of relying on a Windows-only conversion.
Format other instrument types
QuoteMedia uses a leading character for several asset classes:
| Instrument | Prefix | Example or pattern |
|---|---|---|
| Index | ^ | ^SPX |
| Option | @ | QuoteMedia OSI option symbol |
| Interest rate | ! | Provider symbol beginning with ! |
| Futures contract | / | /GC for a supported front-month gold symbol |
| Foreign exchange rate | $ | $USDEUR |
Don't build an @ option symbol by hand unless you already know the QuoteMedia OSI format. Use a returned option chain or create and convert an option symbol.
A front-month futures symbol and a dated futures contract aren't interchangeable. Confirm the root, month code, year code, and exchange suffix in QuoteMedia's guide before you use a futures formula.
Check what your plan includes
A correct symbol identifies the listing. It doesn't add permission for delayed, end-of-day, or real-time data.
The following plan coverage applies to non-professional users. Check MarketXLS pricing before you buy an add-on because an eligible plan might already include the feed that you need.
| Data type | Standard | Advanced | Business |
|---|---|---|---|
| US and Canadian stocks and ETFs | 15-minute delayed | Real-time streaming | Real-time streaming |
| US options | End-of-day | Real-time streaming | Real-time streaming |
| US mutual funds | End-of-day | End-of-day | End-of-day |
| Forex | 15-minute delayed | 15-minute delayed | Real-time |
| US indices | On demand | End-of-day | Real-time |
| Futures | Add-on | Add-on | Add-on |
| International stocks | Add-on | Add-on | Add-on |
Add a QuoteMedia exchange feed
The tables below replace the former QuoteMedia data-bundle page. They list the public non-professional add-ons that MarketXLS currently offers. Prices are the listed add-on amounts in US dollars; confirm the billing frequency and final amount at checkout. If your MarketXLS plan already includes the same exchange and update speed, don't buy it again.

Not listed means that the public non-professional bundle list doesn't show that update speed. It doesn't promise that the exchange can never provide it. Contact MarketXLS before you build a workflow around an unlisted feed.
To request or purchase an add-on, open the MarketXLS QuoteMedia checkout or contact MarketXLS support with the exchange, asset type, and update speed. Complete any exchange agreements required for the selected feed.
Set up the feed after activation
- On Windows, use the QuoteMedia credentials supplied for the account, save them in MarketXLS settings, and select Test Connection. Follow Set up QuoteMedia on Windows.
- On a Mac or in Excel for the web, sign in to MarketXLS. The add-in connects to QuoteMedia automatically; don't look for a separate QuoteMedia password field. Follow Use QuoteMedia on Mac or Excel for the web.
Check whether you are a professional user
Professional users are subject to different QuoteMedia entitlements, agreements, and exchange fees. Don't use the public non-professional add-on prices above to estimate professional access. Review the professional-user definition, and contact MarketXLS support with the exchange, asset type, and required data speed.
You are generally a professional user when you use market data for business rather than personal investment, share it as part of a business activity, access it for an organization, or work in a regulated securities, investment, banking, insurance, or commodities role. Use the complete definition on the pricing page when you classify the account.
Diagnose a symbol or access error
Test the same QM_ function with MSFT, then compare the result:
| Result | Likely issue |
|---|---|
MSFT works and the international symbol returns Invalid Symbol | Check the base ticker, colon suffix, listing venue, and security type. |
MSFT works and the international symbol returns Not Entitled | The symbol is recognized, but the account doesn't have the requested exchange feed. Check the plan, add-on, agreements, and subscriber classification. |
| Both symbols fail | Check the QuoteMedia connection, sign-in, formula name, and streaming state before you change the suffix. |
| The value appears but is delayed or unchanged | Confirm the plan's data speed, the exchange session, the requested metric, and completed agreements. |
| The value is in an unexpected currency | Confirm that you selected the intended listing. A company can trade on more than one exchange in different currencies. |
Read Fix Please Refresh, Loading, and NA for exact cell messages. For a value that is recognized but delayed or unexpected, use Fix stale, delayed, or unexpected data.
Ask for exchange access
When you contact support about an additional exchange, include:
- Your MarketXLS account email, but no password
- Professional or non-professional classification
- Exchange and country
- Equities, ETFs, options, futures, indices, or another asset type
- Delayed, end-of-day, or real-time access
- One example company name and the symbol that you tried
This information lets support distinguish a symbol question from an entitlement request.
