Open Excel after an add-in problem
Start Excel in safe mode and temporarily disable MarketXLS to isolate a Windows add-in conflict.
Use Excel safe mode when desktop Excel closes during startup or doesn't open normally after an add-in change. Safe mode starts Excel without loading most add-ins.
Start Excel in safe mode
- Press and hold Ctrl.
- While you hold Ctrl, open Excel.
- When Excel asks whether to start in safe mode, select Yes.
You can also press Windows key + R, enter excel /safe, and select OK.
Disable MarketXLS temporarily
- In safe mode, select File > Options > Add-ins.
- At the bottom of the window, select COM Add-ins from Manage.
- Select Go.
- Clear the MarketXLS checkbox.
- Select OK, and then close Excel.
- Open Excel normally.
Capture the COM Add-ins dialog with MarketXLS visible and unrelated add-ins hidden.

If Excel now opens, the issue involves MarketXLS or an interaction with another add-in.
Isolate an add-in conflict
- Disable other nonessential COM add-ins.
- Enable MarketXLS.
- Close and reopen Excel.
- Re-enable the other add-ins one at a time, restarting Excel after each change.
If Excel fails when a particular combination is enabled, contact MarketXLS support and include the names and versions of the affected add-ins.
If Excel doesn't open even when MarketXLS is disabled, use Microsoft's Excel startup and repair guidance or contact your Microsoft 365 administrator.
Capture the Disabled Items screen showing where an add-in is restored.
