Open Excel after an add-in problem

Start Excel in safe mode and temporarily disable MarketXLS to isolate a Windows add-in conflict.

Use Excel safe mode when desktop Excel closes during startup or doesn't open normally after an add-in change. Safe mode starts Excel without loading most add-ins.

Start Excel in safe mode

  1. Press and hold Ctrl.
  2. While you hold Ctrl, open Excel.
  3. When Excel asks whether to start in safe mode, select Yes.

You can also press Windows key + R, enter excel /safe, and select OK.

Disable MarketXLS temporarily

  1. In safe mode, select File > Options > Add-ins.
  2. At the bottom of the window, select COM Add-ins from Manage.
  3. Select Go.
  4. Clear the MarketXLS checkbox.
  5. Select OK, and then close Excel.
  6. Open Excel normally.
Temporarily clear MarketXLS in COM Add-ins to test whether it affects Excel startup.

If Excel now opens, the issue involves MarketXLS or an interaction with another add-in.

Isolate an add-in conflict

  1. Disable other nonessential COM add-ins.
  2. Enable MarketXLS.
  3. Close and reopen Excel.
  4. Re-enable the other add-ins one at a time, restarting Excel after each change.

If Excel fails when a particular combination is enabled, contact MarketXLS support and include the names and versions of the affected add-ins.

If Excel doesn't open even when MarketXLS is disabled, use Microsoft's Excel startup and repair guidance or contact your Microsoft 365 administrator.

Also check whether Excel moved MarketXLS into Disabled Items after a failed startup.
