Market data

Set up data providers, understand market coverage, and work with specialized datasets.

MarketXLS formulas can use different data sources. Use this section to connect QuoteMedia, check coverage and exchange access, or work with options and adjusted history.

Set up real-time access

Start with Use QuoteMedia with MarketXLS. The guide checks your plan and sends you to the correct setup for the Windows or Microsoft 365 add-in.

The two add-ins connect differently:

  • On Windows, you enter your QuoteMedia credentials and can test the connection.
  • On a Mac or in Excel for the web, MarketXLS manages the QuoteMedia connection after you sign in.

You might also need to accept exchange agreements before an exchange can provide real-time data.

Use streaming functions

QuoteMedia provides both snapshot and streaming functions. A QM_ function isn't necessarily real-time or auto-updating. Read Use QuoteMedia functions by platform to choose the correct family, and Turn real-time streaming on or off to check the add-in state.

Check a value

When a value looks missing or delayed, check these items in order:

  1. Confirm the symbol and exchange suffix.
  2. Confirm that the market is open or that the reporting period has ended.
  3. Check whether the function returns real-time, delayed, or end-of-day data.
  4. Confirm that your subscription includes the requested asset and data speed.
  5. If the formula streams, confirm that streaming is on.
  6. Refresh the relevant cells if the function returns an on-demand value.

Read Understand data coverage and delays for a complete checklist.

For a QuoteMedia function that uses a Canadian or international listing, use the canonical exchange suffix and then check whether your plan or add-on includes that exchange.

Use options data

Options workflows use different formulas for one exact contract, a current chain, and a historical snapshot. Read Use current and historical options data before you build or extend an option workbook. If you need one contract symbol, start with Create and convert option symbols.

Understand historical adjustments

Splits, dividends, spinoffs, and ADR ratio changes can rewrite an adjusted historical series. Read Understand splits, dividends, and adjusted prices before you compare raw prices, adjusted prices, price returns, or total returns.

Find the function source

Open the formula reference and check the description for the function that you use. Some functions use different providers or update schedules even when they return related data.
